A Language Beyond Words

“An animal’s eyes have the power to speak a great language.”

Humans and horses have had a bond that dates back hundreds, if not thousands, of years. I saw a quote the other day that said “A dog may be a man’s best friend, but the horse wrote history.” Horses helped humans travel farther and faster. They rode with us to countless battles. They’ve helped farmers and soldiers and policemen. I’m not sure where humans would be today without our long history with and reliance on horses.

There’s a farm a few minutes away from my home where you can go and spend time with animals (for free) called Frying Pan Farm Park. I stopped by there the other day after work to say hi to my friends (all four-legged, of course) to see how they were doing. I’ve been here many times now and have gotten to know the cows, goats and lambs quite well. They are all so cute!

The farm has a few horses who live there, but they’ve always been far out in the field when I’ve visited before, so I hadn’t spent time with them up close and personal. This time however, I was one of the only visitors at the farm since it was close to closing. The sun was setting and the snow was glistening. The farm was completely quiet, and as I turned the corner, I saw two majestic horses staring right at me.

I was amazed by their size, sturdiness and gentleness. They tenderly played with one another, and took turns staring into my eyes. It’s hard to explain the connection you feel when staring into the eyes of a beautiful animal like this. There are no sounds– only soft breaths and understanding. Standing there in the cold, face-to-face with these horses is a moment I won’t forget.

Their big, deep, brown eyes seemed to hold centuries of wisdom in them. My auntie has always loved horses, and even owned one in the past. She has told me for years how horses have a “yogi’s spirit” and how they are incredibly spiritual beings. After doing some research of my own and witnessing this intimate encounter, I completely understand why.

Theirs is a language beyond words. Horses can sense your energy, your emotions, and your aura. They help you heal and connect with the present moment: the now. They allow you to stroke their long, beautiful faces and just be with them awhile, not asking anything of you except your presence. They are playful, graceful, sturdy, and gentle. They are humble and intuitive. They are powerful and free-spirited. They embody everything I want to be.

I will be returning to visit my friends again today, and often. I am so grateful these angels on earth live so close to me. If you live in the D.C. area, please pay a visit to Frying Pan Farm Park. It’s a little slice of magic on earth.
